Rafting the Rio Pacuare River
Father and son float during a mellow section between rapids.

The Pacuare River one-day white water rafting trip starts early. We will be by to pick you up from the hotel bright and early but only after you have had your fill of Gallo Pinto (the infamous Costa Rican breakfast), fresh fruit and strong coffee. You will need your strength for today's adventure. We will then travel east of Turrialba to the small town of Tres Equis where we will leave the main highway and descend into the depths of the dense jungle as we make our way to the put-in.
After a thorough safety talk and fitting you with lifejackets and helmets we shove off. One rapid after another will keep your heart pounding with a few rests in between to appreciate the magnificent rainforest surrounding the river. |
The Lower Pacuare offers a handful of class IV rapids with numerous class IIIs. The canyon is surrounded by one of the few remaining virgin rainforests in Central America and is surrounded by numerous creeks that join the river in breathtaking waterfalls.
After running the Huacas river gorge, home of some of the biggest rapids on the river, we will find a nice beach for lunch.. Enjoy the warmth of the sun, or the mysterious of the surrounding jungle while your guides set up a gourmet lunch on top of an overturned raft. After you have eaten all the food you can and snuck in a nap if your lucky its time to get back onto the rafts. The afternoon consists of more heart pounding rapids and superb landscapes as we make our way down the river. |
The tropical 'Sun Bird' spreads it wings on the bank of the Pacuare River.

The whole family was enjoying their white water rafting trip.

Besides the adrenaline that the Pacuare River offers, the area is chock full of exotic tropical birds. Toucans, orependulams, egrets and herons all call this river home. If we really look hard we might even spot a sloth or two high up in the trees watching the world go by at their own pace.
We will finish our day after paddling 19 miles at the town of Siquirres. This will be the first civilization we will come across after departing from the put in. Showers and cold refreshments await you before we hop back in the van and head back to Turrialba just before the sun starts to set. It's a full day but definitely one you won't forget anytime soon.
